FAQ

What am I auditioning for?

You are auditioning to be part of the Full Company, where you will be assigned to a group based on age, skill, vocal range, and other factors. Casting for each show is determined by our director, Rob Ursan. While the director has specific roles in mind, you are not auditioning for a particular role at this stage.

This season we are producing four shows!

  • Junior Company: The Snow Queen (adaptation by Robert Ursan)

  • Intermediate Company: Bugsy Malone

  • Senior Company: Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (musical adaptation by Robert Ursan - rock musical)

  • Full Company: Water for Elephants

Do I need to have experience to be a part of DIWC?

Formal training or experience with live theatre isn’t a requirement for joining DIWC, but our company is a pre-professional program for youth that produces full-scale musicals every year. This is a development program for any youth ready to take the next steps in their musical theatre journey.

Can I just audition for one show?

No. Members of the company must commit to the entire season. This means you will be part of two shows each year and will attend weekly classes throughout the season.

How long does the season last?

Our season kicks off with a mini boot camp (August 23-24), including games and bonding activities. The season runs from September to the end of March. If a full-season commitment is too much or you'd like to try out the DIWC program, we recommend our sessional classes, which don’t require an audition. These classes are a great option for a shorter commitment. Visit doitwithclass.com/classes to register for a sessional class.

Is this a big commitment for me to join?

Yes. Becoming a company member is a significant commitment. All members are expected to fully participate in every aspect of DIWC productions, including acting, singing, and dancing. You will need to attend weekly training (typically one hour on Saturday afternoons) and participate in all scheduled rehearsals, which occur on Saturdays, Sundays, and occasionally on Friday evenings. Detailed rehearsal schedules will be provided at the start of the season in September.

During show weeks, company members must participate in six to eight school and public performances, including mid-week daytime shows, as well as media events, filming/photography, and other production-related activities.

Are parents involved?

Yes. DIWC is a non-profit organization that relies heavily on parent volunteers for various tasks, including set construction, backstage assistance, and front-of-house duties. Every family is considered a legal member of the company, with opportunities to serve on our volunteer board of directors and participate in the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Families will also be required to work bingo shifts to help keep tuition costs lower.

How much does the program cost?

Joining DIWC involves a financial commitment (program fees) that helps cover the costs of a pre-professional training program, including staffing, costumes, sets, lighting, venue rentals, rehearsal space, and more. This fee is subsidized through grants and revenue from SLGA bingos.

Tuition for the 2025-26 season will be set in June by the DIWC Board. The annual fee covers seven months of programming (September to March). Families with more than one DIWC member will receive a 10% discount for each additional family member.

Historical fees for reference:

  • 2024-25: $2490 (reduced to $2100 if bingo shifts were worked by the family)

  • 2023-24: $2300

  • 2022-23: $2100

  • 2021-22: $2100 ($100 COVID recovery reduction)

  • 2020-21: $1700 (no live performances due to COVID; reduced expenses)

  • 2019-20: $2100

  • 2018-19: $1900

  • 2016-17: $1900 (additional dance/acting classes)

  • 2015-16: $1570 (additional dance/acting classes)

Do I have to take dance or music lessons outside of DIWC?

Formal training or experience isn’t a requirement to join DIWC. However, since musical theatre involves both dance and movement, we require company members to take a dance/acro/movement* class for the 2025-26 season. Dance options can either be taken through DIWC (offered separately from company rehearsals at an additional low cost) or through another dance studio. Proof of registration in an approved external class will be required. A high-level sport (2-3 hours of training per week) such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc., may also be considered an acceptable form of movement and conditioning in place of dance.

Do I have to take music lessons outside of DIWC?

The ability to learn music quickly and dedicate time each week to practice show material is important. Music tracks and sheet music will be provided for each show to practice at home. Experience reading music is an asset but not required. While not mandatory, taking music or voice lessons outside of DIWC has proven to be beneficial for current and past company members.

Do I need to buy special dance shoes or costumes?

  • Dance Shoes: You will need to purchase black jazz shoes to wear during rehearsals and performances. These shoes are mandatory for all classes, rehearsals, and performances.

  • Costumes: All costumes, apart from shoes, are covered by the program fees. However, everyone will be required to purchase undergarments to wear under their costumes (details will be shared in the welcome letter).

  • Basic Wardrobe: Members will need to supply black leggings/pants, black socks, and both white and black long-sleeve shirts, which will be stored at the studio for the season.

My child has special considerations and/or abilities - who do I talk to?

DIWC is committed to supporting diversity and inclusion in our company. We welcome individuals of all backgrounds, abilities*, and experiences, provided they are willing and able to fully participate in rehearsals and performances. Some productions may have specific constraints based on production rights, but we strive to make accomodations when possible.

We encourage parents to share any special considerations or needs with the artistic team, so we can ensure the best support for your child. All information will be kept confidential and shared only with the necessary individuals (artistic team and a designated board member). Examples of diversity include race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical ability, neurodiversity, and more.

*Ability is a flexible concept. We strive for inclusion, however, some productions have specific characteristics or constraints that are inflexible based on theatrical production rights.
